Grass, grass and more grass

We are currently in the middle of the main growing season on the farm, when most of the coming year's feed springs up. While pasture is abundant at this time of year, the challenge is to visualise and ration that feed over the coming year, starting now.

Under our approach to regenerative management, we don't cut hay to store for later, instead leaving the grass to mature where it stands. This ensures we have year round ground cover which helps prevent the soil from drying out and becoming vulnerable to erosion, compaction, carbon and biodiversity loss, rather than ripping nutrient from the ecosystem cycle and depleting the soil biosphere.

It also means we are not locked in to months stuck in the tractor feeding out bales. While we are unsure if this year's drought will continue into next year, we have noticed that our paddocks have responded much better to the shift in seasons compared to those around us. We are also curious if the coming months' beef will start to reflect the animals' access to fresher feed with higher sugar content.

Let us know if you detect any differences in flavour or marbling! In other news, our house cow Izzy popped out a calf (Wizzy) which means we are back milking for personal use. And speaking of spring calves, our beautiful farm employee Jock and his partner Penny welcomed their baby boy, Magnus, to the world this month! This brings the total of feral farm kids to three. What mischief will this lot be getting up to on their peewee 80s in a few years time?
